Width and speed enter the formula identically but do not cost the same. Speed burns fuel sharply, degrades most operations and needs more overlap for accuracy — which is why farm machinery has grown wide rather than fast.

Where 8.25 comes from

An acre is 43,560 square feet and a mile is 5,280 feet, so a strip one foot wide and one mile long is 5,280 square feet, and 43,560 divided by 5,280 is 8.25. It is not an empirical constant but a unit conversion wearing a disguise — which is why the formula only works in feet and miles per hour.

Field efficiency is where the day goes

The theoretical figure assumes no overlap, no turning at the headland, no refilling and no stopping. Real field efficiency runs 70 to 85 % for most operations and lower on small or awkward fields, where turning is a larger share of the work. Planning a day on the theoretical number is how you end up finishing in the dark.

Width beats speed

Both enter the formula the same way, but they do not cost the same. Going faster increases fuel use sharply, worsens the quality of most operations and raises the overlap needed for accuracy. A wider implement covers the same ground at a workable speed — which is most of why machinery has grown wide rather than fast.

Rules of thumb, and the field

Every figure here describes an average season on an average site. Soil type, aspect, drainage, variety and weather each move the answer by more than the arithmetic does, and a grower who has kept records for a few years on one piece of ground knows it better than any formula. Use these to plan an order or size an implement, then trust what the ground has actually done before.
