Centigrade to Celsius Converter
Centigrade and Celsius are two names for the same unit — the conversion is 1:1. Here is why, plus the units that do differ.
They are the same unit
Centigrade and Celsius refer to one and the same unit, so there is nothing to convert: the number does not change. Any calculator that claims otherwise is converting something else.
The scale was called centigrade — Latin for “a hundred steps” — because there are 100 degrees between the freezing and boiling points of water. It was renamed Celsius in 1948 after Anders Celsius, partly because “centigrade” already meant a hundredth of a right angle in French and Spanish. Same scale, same numbers, new name.
