Letters as numbers

Before dedicated numerals were widespread, several alphabets doubled as number systems. Hebrew and Greek both assign each letter a value, so any word also carries a total. Adding those values is called gematria in Hebrew and isopsephy in Greek.

How the values are laid out

Both alphabets use the same three-tier pattern: the first nine letters are 1-9, the next nine are 10-90, and the rest are 100 upwards. Greek keeps three obsolete letters — digamma, koppa and sampi — purely to fill the gaps at 6, 90 and 900.

Hebrew has a wrinkle: five letters take a different shape at the end of a word. Standard counting gives those final forms the same value as their normal shape; the alternative sofit system continues the series to 500-900. Both are offered above because both are used.

English systems are modern

The English schemes here have no historical basis — the Latin alphabet was never used for counting this way. They are conventions invented much later: A=1 simply numbers the alphabet, and the A=6 variant multiplies that by six. They are included because people look for them, not because they are equivalent to the Hebrew or Greek traditions.

What the numbers mean

Gematria was used in rabbinic commentary to draw connections between words sharing a value, and as a mnemonic and interpretive device. Whether such a connection carries meaning is a question of interpretation and belief, not arithmetic. The calculation itself is just addition — and because many words share totals, coincidences are common and easy to over-read.
