The method

volume = area × depth, or area ÷ stated coverage

Coverage is thickness in disguise

A gallon is 231 cubic inches, so spread ⅛ inch thick it covers 1,848 square inches — about 12.8 square feet. Halve the thickness and you double the coverage; the two numbers are the same fact stated differently.

Self-levelling products need the thickness right, because too thin will not level and too thick can cure hot and crack. Check the manufacturer’s range before trusting an arithmetic answer.
