The identity cannot be wrong — the units cancel and it reduces to CO2 = CO2. Its whole value is showing that emissions are a PRODUCT of four things, so efficiency gains that are slower than income growth achieve nothing at all.

The formula

CO2 = population * (GDP/person) * (energy/GDP) * (CO2/energy)

An identity, not a model

The Kaya identity cannot be wrong: the units cancel and it reduces to CO2 = CO2. Its value is entirely in the decomposition — it shows that emissions are the product of four things, and that any policy must move at least one of them. Something that improves energy efficiency while wealth grows faster achieves nothing, and the identity makes that arithmetic impossible to avoid.

Two levers nobody wants to pull

Population and income per head have both risen steadily for two centuries and no serious proposal reduces either. That leaves energy intensity — how much energy a unit of output takes — and carbon intensity, how much CO2 a unit of energy carries. Essentially all climate policy is aimed at those two, and the second is where decarbonising electricity does its work.

The rates matter more than the levels

Because it is a product, the growth rates add. If population grows 1 % and income 2 %, then carbon intensity must fall faster than 3 % a year merely to hold emissions flat — and far faster than that to cut them. Seeing the required rate written down is the most sobering thing this identity does.

How much to trust a footprint

Life-cycle figures for the same product routinely differ by a factor of two between studies, because deciding what to count — the farm, the packaging, the shop, the drive home, the disposal — is a methodological choice rather than a measurement. The numbers here are central estimates from published meta-analyses. They are reliable for comparing one option against another, which is what people actually use them for, and not reliable to the second significant figure.

The other thing worth keeping in view is scale. Individual choices matter and they are not where the emissions are: the difference between the best and worst quartile of beef producers is larger than most people's entire dietary footprint, and that is a question about agriculture policy rather than about shopping.
