The conversion
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours:
decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
So 7 h 45 min is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. Going the other way,
multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes.
Why payroll wants decimals
Pay is a multiplication, and you cannot multiply 7:45 by an hourly rate directly — the colon is not a decimal point. 7:45 is 7.75 hours, not 7.45, and treating it as 7.45 underpays by 18 minutes a day. Over a year that is more than a week of unpaid work, which is why timesheets ask for decimal hours.
The ones worth memorising
15 min = 0.25, 20 min = 0.333,
30 min = 0.5, 40 min = 0.667,
45 min = 0.75. Only minute counts divisible by 6 give an exact
decimal; the rest repeat, so most systems round to two places.
Check how your employer rounds. Rounding each entry to the nearest quarter hour is common and legal in many places, but it has to be applied evenly rather than always downwards.
