The formula
panels = π × diameter ÷ panel length
Straight panels make a polygon
Corral panels do not bend, so a “60-foot round pen” is really a polygon with as many sides as panels. With sixteen 12-foot panels the corners sit slightly outside the nominal circle, which is why the panel count from the circumference is a good estimate rather than an exact answer.
Sixty feet is the conventional diameter. Much below fifty and a horse cannot travel comfortably at speed on the constant curve; larger pens are easier on joints but harder to work in.
