A writers' scale, not a physical one

The original series used warp factor cubed; The Next Generation switched to the power of 10/3 with a deliberate asymptote at warp 10, representing infinite speed, so that writers could not keep escalating the numbers. The two scales diverge sharply at high warp, which is a large part of why travel times across episodes are so inconsistent.

None of it is physics. Relativity does not permit travel faster than light, and the closest real proposal — the Alcubierre metric, which contracts space ahead of a ship and expands it behind — requires negative energy density in quantities nobody has observed or knows how to produce.

What relativity does offer is stranger: a ship accelerating at a comfortable 1 g crosses the entire galaxy in about twelve years of onboard time, because the distance ahead contracts. A hundred thousand years pass at home. The shortcut is forbidden, but the consolation prize is remarkable.
