π = circumference ÷ diameter ≈ 3.14159265358979

π is irrational and transcendental

Irrational means it is not any ratio of whole numbers, so its decimal never terminates or repeats. Transcendental, proved by Lindemann in 1882, means it is not the root of any polynomial with rational coefficients — which settled the ancient problem of squaring the circle as impossible.

Note that 22/7 is only an approximation, and a slightly large one. 355/113 is far better and easy to remember: the digits 113355 split in half.
